Boxing Day is the name (in the Commonwealth countries) for the day after Christmas. Wikipedia has a good write up on it. Here in the Frozen North it is the biggest retail shopping day of the year (like "Black Friday" in the USA) with people lining up outside stores overnight, cheap big-screen TVs, etc.

ReplyDeleteI'm confused as to the origin of the name "Boxing."
ReplyDeleteIt is the day the employers gave their employees a box full of gifts. So it could also be called bonus day.
ReplyDeleteIt is also the day when you are so sick of your family that fights start very easily - so boxing is common (just joking!).
I think it's some English/Irish/Scottish thing. Haven't quite figured it out myself. :-)
