Perspective is everything.

The family and I went out and cut down our Christmas tree recently. We went to a tree farm and spent a while picking out just the right tree. We eventually picked one out and killed it (i.e. cut it down). It was a bit big, but we didn't think too much of it until we got it home.

Once we got it to the front door, the massive size became evident. Until I had some perspective, I didn't realize how big it was. The fact that it seemed to weigh about 200 pounds should have been a clue. With a bit of shoving and pushing we got it inside and stood it up. Thankfully, we have a vaulted ceiling. So, there was room, barely. The thing is over 10 feet tall.

I've always wanted a really big tree, but this is ridiculous. I tried taking a picture, but it doesn't do it justice. I'll let you use your imagination.

I once knew this guy who cut down a tree in a Montana forest that was way too big for his apartment...sounds like the two of you should get together.

One year, my father tried getting a live tree with the roots still attached--the kind that lives through Christmas and that you can plant later. Mistake? It was way too heavy for him and several of my cousins to get through the door. He threw out his back, gave up on getting the tree into the house, planted it in the yard and got another for the living room.
The worst part? Tree died anyway.

Have you people never seen "Christmas Vacation"?

Have you checked the tree for squirrels?

There's not a squirrel in that monster is there, Clark?

Also, please have your cousin refrain from emptying his "shitter" into the local sewers.

I realize liberal arts chemist beat me to the punch, but I feel there just aren't enough Christmas Vacation references sprinkled about the internet.

Hey anonymous,

I think I remember that guy and his huge tree. If I recall correctly, his upstairs neighbor always showed great restraint on x-mas tree size. None the less both showed great skill trapping trees in the Gallatin forrest.

Anon 1: yeah, I think that guy is married to my wife.

Ψ*Ψ I have thought about the idea, and I was serious. Maybe I won't.

Christmas Vacation? Priceless.

anon 2: whatever. There is nothing like trapping a tree with the good ol' half-trap!

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a fantastic idea...but keep in mind...that root ball is REALLY HEAVY!

Chemgeek,

No arguments here about the merits of the half-trap. We are heading out in the not too distant future to trap a tree as well. Too bad the "farms" here in the great white nothing of MN pale in comparison to the mountainous forest of yore!

True. Stalking a tree in a MN tree farm is not like stalking one in the Pacific Northwest!!!

(N.B. I used "Pacific Northwest" just to annoy you.)
