Safety glasses are not optional!!!! PART 2

I once told a tale about how safety glasses saved my eye sight. I have always been and will always be a safety glasses extremist. No one works in my labs without safety glasses.

Even when I am at home, I use safety glasses when I'm doing things like using power tools (saws, trimmers, drills etc..) or mixing a really strong drink (OK, maybe not that one, but you get the point).

I am slowly (sloooooooowly) building a bar in my basement. Tonight, I finally found some time to make some progress. I went to my shed to cut some lumber to the requisite size. I was wearing safety glasses as usual. During the course of events, I measured and marked a piece of plywood without glasses on as tape measures and pencils are not commonly known to cause eye injuries.

I didn't put the safety glasses back on.

As I started to saw through the wood, I hit a knot and a small chunk of celluose, hemicellulose and lignin (i.e. wood) flew through the air and nailed me in the eye. It specifically hit my sclera (the white of my eye). It didn't hurt much, but I knew something had happened.

I had my photographer-wife take a picture so I could put it on my blog and gross some of you out:
From my perspective, it looks a lot worse. At this point, I'm not going to seek medical attention since 'tis mearly a flesh wound.

The bottom line: WEAR YOUR FREAKIN' SAFETY GLASSES, DUMBASS!!!!!!!!!!

I am the dumbass for not wearing them like I preach.

Wear your safety glasses, people.

Hey, dude you must have really been a) totally focussed on what you were doing and it slowed your blink response or b) like totally high. Cool photo though it should become your profile photo and you could change your name to Sauron.

Joking aside life is a constant sequence of life changing accidents that don't happen. It is only occassionally that the accidents happen and teach us lessons. Glad you are OK.

By the way, now that we have seen your unblinking gaze I can see that you do not wear contacts. What is your hyper-eye safety position on wearing contacts under safety glasses?

Can I get a copy of this for the science class? The kids HATE wearing their goggles and I am constantly having to remove them from the class because they won't wear them. Seriously, they are more worried about having the mask-face ring for 5 minutes than loosing their eyesight for the rest of their lives. Then again, I don't teach the world's brightest 7th graders.

Glad that it was only a "flesh wound". Be careful.

You are more than welcomed to copy it for educational purposes. But if you profit from this, so help me God I will poke a needle in my other eye.

I'm just kidding. Use it. If you want a better pic, email me.

People tend to take their safety glasses off all the time, and don't get used to wearing them. Remember, the time you need safety glasses is when you don't think you do!

The wood must've taken you by surprise! I agree that safety glasses should be worn at all times whenever doing anything that might potentially injure a person.

Industrial industries consistently use Wiley X prescription safety glasses and similar products in the workplace. Since workers are directly in contact with harmful particles and chemicals it would be best to not remove their Wiley X prescription lenses.

Indeed, there's no harm in wearing them at all times. Thanks!

so i'd positioned on them complete time. getting used to donning them complete time is fantastically uncomplicated and in time you will no longer think of something approximately donning glasses and it experience very organic and you will no longer even understand you have them on.

eyeglasses or spectacles, are devices consisting of glass or hard plastic lenses mounted in a frame that holds them in front of a person's eyes, typically using a bridge over the nose and arms which rest over the ears. ... Glasses are worn for eye protection in some sports, such as squash.
